When Jessica Price was a little girl in 1920s Leeds her father gave her a pair of shoes with a sixpence hidden in the toe of one. 'For luck' he explained 'and to say you have far to go in life.' After a childhood torn between her hen-pecked father and her cantankerous mother Jess has a disastrous spell as housekeeper to the local priest before she falls in love with her childhood soulmate Wilf.
