Jim Capstick who has amassed a fortune by dubious methods has been chairman and virtually the owner of Brunton Rover Football Club proud members of the Premier League. There are suspicions that he is treating the club as no more than another business asset. When Capstick makes a surprise announcement after a victory he is prepared for the distress it will cause the Lancashire mill town but not for the foul play that follows. DCI 'Percy' Peach and DS Lucy Blake quickly find they have several suspects but which one is capable of murder...?
